Basically, Twilight is a love story between a teenage girl, Bella and a handsome but slightly aloof teenage boy Edward (turns out he is a vampire and 117 years old). I was fortunate that my family was always able to get me one of my favorite dolls when my birthday rolled around. Nobody ever had to resort to fighting in parking lots to buy me a doll. I saw videos of people actually fighting over dolls back then and it looked ridiculous to me.

I think I enjoyed playing with the doll accessories at least as much as I enjoyed the dolls themselves. My Cabbage Patches and Strawberry Shortcake dolls kept me happily busy for hours as I set up tiny tea parties and sorted through all of the accessories. Although many of my dolls are now put away for safe keeping, I will eventually pass them on to my daughter.

I loved styling my Barbie's hair immensely. I had several different models of Barbie growing up. Each one was special to me. I also had a huge box of Barbie accessories that just added to the fun. Barbie was definitely a favorite of mine.

My uncle built me a special Barbie house that I used constantly. I think that Barbie is one of the most enduring and well loved dolls for girls because you can give her so many different looks and do so many things with her. I was proud of the fact that I never damaged any of my dolls. They were all well kept.

Some Barbie's are made specifically to be collectible. I have some of those, but never aimed to collect them intentionally. They just sort of ended up my collection. Although some Barbies have very nice resale value today, I intend to pass mine on to my children.

The early eighties were a big time for Cabbage Patch dolls. My collection of these dolls was started when I got swept up in the frenzy to get one. My first one had dark brown curly hair. She was soon followed by a boy Cabbage Patch with no hair at all! My friends and I often babysat together as we played with all of our collected dolls.

Memories of dolls like my Cabbage Patches, Strawberry Shortcakes and Barbies all play in to why I am getting so in to collecting now, in my older years. I know that I will continue collecting dolls for years to come. It is a wholesome activity that can bring mothers and daughters together, and as an added bonus, they sometimes end up being quite valuable!

Lionel offered a cool two channel system way back in the 1940's. This awesome before her time system used oscillating electrons and a transmitter to shoot messages through rails where your locomotive took in orders and delivered them with railroad precision!

Operation of your model could be attained through the use of a toggle switch which allowed for choosing locomotive you wish to command, and a transmitter to send signals to the locomotives riding the rails. Lionel's one flaw was its cumbersome quality which made it difficult to manage.

Lionel's lack of electronic prowless gave just enough room for electronics giant GE to step in and play ball for an inning or two! GE shoveled out a fabulous 5 channel masterpiece that topped Lionel's previously king of the block 2 channel system. GE's newer, improved command control allowed for multiple control of several trains on one block!

GE called this system ASTRAC (Automatic Simultaneous Train Control). This new system from GE utilized a silicon based rectifier that Incorporated a receiver in each cab. The receiver responded to signals within the tracks sent by a transmitter mounted elsewhere.

Later came other systems such as, Dynotrols Carrier Control which was popular for a while in the sixties and seventies. These early command control devices shared a major setback which held the industry down for a few years. These control devices where not at all compatible. This meant you had to have all the components made by the same manufacture as different companies followed different electrical blueprints and guidelines. You could easily short out your layout or even worse cause a serious electrical fire.

Lenz, a well know European DCC innovator, suggested that then industry device a system in which compatibility of model train decoders, power stations and transmitters be universal. These decisions paved the way for the diverse DCC industry we're privileged with today.
